What you should know about my professional career …

Why did you become a bespoke tailor?

At the age of 13 I started to teach myself how to sew with the help of books and magazines focused on pattern making up to the point where I was able to make a jacket. As time went by I considered more and more to learn how to sew properly. A bespoke tailor with their high level of precision and use of a floating canvas seemed to me the right place to be. That’s how I decided not to go to university but to become an apprentice at a bespoke tailor.

Where did you learn your craft?

My apprenticeship began in 1992 in Munich at master tailor Karl Wersteins. After working there I went to work for Volkmar Arnulf, the most famous Berlin tailor, where I did my “Meisterpüfung“ at the Handwerkskammer Berlin. In 2003, I opened my own workshop and then in 2012 I relocated with my workshop to Potsdam-Babelsberg.

How would you describe your style?

By omitting ornamentation and unnecessary details I arrive at a straightforward silhouette. This look I’d describe as modern and urban. My tailoring should lend men subtle elegance and make them fit in wherever they are.

How do you consider the clients wishes? Do you tailor everything? Are there stylistic or technical limits?

The clients wishes are the basis for my work. I’m a tailor, not a designer. From my point of view bespoke tailoring makes little sense if I dress them based on my taste. I do consult the client. I offer alternatives if what the client wants isn’t possible or a stylistic no-go. What I do is classical tailoring: this encompasses the full spectrum of jackets, vests, trousers, coats and formal attire.

What is your clientele like?

Since 2012 I’ve been located in Potsdam-Babelsberg. I have built a loyal customer base there and in Berlin. I also have clients from the United States, Canada, Switzerland and the Arab world. Among them are judges, lawyers, politicians, university professors, CEOs, clergy and artists.

How do your customers find you?

Mostly clients find me on the internet and occasionally through mentions in the press. My workshop was on a list of Germany’s 25 best bespoke tailors, judged by experts for the Economics magazine Euro. I’m also represented in several books on the topics of menswear and bespoke tailoring.
